Through a partnership with Google, the State of Hawaii is offering the ‘AI Essentials’ and ‘Google Prompting Essentials’ courses at no cost to all state and county employees.

Google AI Essentials

Module 1 • One Hour

In this module, you’ll discover how AI works, explore foundational AI concepts like machine learning (ML) and learn about the rise of generative AI. By the end of this module, you’ll have an understanding of the capabilities and limitations of AI tools and how to use generative AI in the workplace.

Module 2 • Two Hours

In this module, you’ll learn how to use generative AI tools to address common workplace challenges and examine the important role humans play in the effective use of AI. By the end of this module, you will be able to determine if AI is appropriate for a given task and use AI to accelerate workflows.

Module 3 • Two Hours

In this module, you’ll understand how generative AI tools produce output and learn how to use prompting techniques, such as few-shot prompting, to write effective prompts and get the output you want. By the end of this module, you will be able to write clear and specific prompts and produce and evaluate outputs that help accomplish workplace tasks.

Module 4 • One Hour

In this module, you’ll learn how to recognize the potential security risks of using AI in the workplace by applying an AI harms framework to workplace scenarios. By the end of this module, you will understand how to use AI responsibly and effectively by mitigating unfair biases and inaccuracies.

Module 5 • Two Hours

In this module, you’ll learn about the ways organizations have leveraged AI and consider how these innovations may inspire your own AI-powered workplace solutions. By the end of this module, you will develop a strategy to stay up-to-date with future AI developments.

Google’s AI Essentials course will teach people to use generative AI effectively in day-to-day work. In under 10 hours, people will get practical, hands-on experience using AI to help with work tasks through videos, readings and interactive exercises. The skills learned can be applied to a variety of roles across industries. After completing the course, people will earn a certificate from Google to share with their network.

Google Prompting Essentials

Module 1 • Two Hours

Need a dependable formula for writing prompts?  In this module, you’ll discover a 5-step prompting framework that you can use across tools and models. And if your prompt doesn’t produce what you need on the first try, don’t worry – that’s part of the process! You’ll learn how to evaluate and iterate until you get the results you’re looking for.

Module 2 • One Hour

Don’t know when to use AI? This module will provide you with practical examples to help you save time at work. You’ll learn how to design prompts that assist in drafting emails tailored to different audiences, supercharge your brainstorming sessions, quickly create tables and trackers, convert meeting notes into actionable items, and summarize lengthy documents.

Module 3 • One Hour

Need to crunch data or pull together a presentation? In this module you’ll learn how to design prompts that help you extract insights, understand spreadsheet formulas, and build graphs to visualize data. Once you’re ready to present your findings, you can use AI tools to help with speaker notes and practice before your big day.

Module 4 • Two Hours

Wish you had a partner to help think through different possibilities? In this module you’ll learn how to use advanced prompting techniques, like prompt chaining and multimodal prompting, to turn abstract ideas into step-by-step solutions. Even better, you’ll create a personalized AI agent to role-play conversations and provide expert feedback that can help you prepare for any scenario.
